Compulsion


Synopsis:
Gideon, fresh from an unexpected encounter with the stuttering Footpath Killer, goes with the team to a college campus which has been experiencing a series of fires which recently turned deadly. As the flames pile up, the BAU must reconcile the inconsistencies in the profile to stop the arsonist before he kills again.

  • Gideon: "No badges. I don't want to satisfy the unsubs need for letting him know he got the FBI here. Try not to look official."
    He turns and looks at Hotch, Elle, Morgan and Reid who are all in suits and/or dark sunglasses.
    Gideon: "Try to look less official."

  • Elle: "Chemical accelerant could mean chemistry student."
    Reid: "It could also mean chemistry professor."
    Elle: "I say student. You need self-confidence to lecture in front of a classroom full of 30 college kids. Arsonists are socially incompetent. This guy doesn't go on dates, doesn't go to parties, doesn't feel comfortable in front of groups."
    (Reid looks at Elle)
    Elle: "And of course he's a total psychopath."
    Reid: "Of course."

  • Garcia: (to Morgan) "You know how on Star Trek when Captain Kirk asked McCoy to do something totally impossible and McCoy says "dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a miracle worker."
    Morgan: "Hey, are you telling me not to expect a miracle?"
    Garcia: "No, I'm saying I'm not a doctor."
    Morgan: "That's my girl."

  • Morgan: OCD? I'm thinking more like OMG.
    Elle: OMG?
    Morgan: Oh My God.

The turning point in the investigation:
Reid realizes that the arsonist's fixation has nothing to do with fire -- instead, he has obsessive compulsive disorder, which forces him to start a fire every time he notices a pattern of three 3's. Hotch, upon hearing this, realizes who the unsub is.

Whodunit?
Clara Hayes, a chemistry student who was about to be kicked out of school. When she was sixteen, she survived a fire in her house, house number 333. Her mother was quoted as saying that her daughter was "tested by God, and she survived." Now, when Clara sees a pattern of three 3's around a person, her OCD forces her to set a fire around them -- to test them the way she herself was tested.
