The Tribe

Synopsis:
When 5 college students in New Mexico are found tortured and murdered in an unoccupied house, the BAU suspects that a group of killers with a knowledge of Native American rituals is responsible.

Set in:
Terra Mesa, NM (Fictional)
Best Moments Between Characters:
  • When Hotch and Blackwolf work together to keep the cult group from overtaking the reservation.

  • At the end of the episode, Hotch goes to visit his brother's restaurant in New York and makes up for their previous argument.

Best Lines:
  • John Blackwolf (to Gideon): You look like a college professor. (to Reid): You look like his student. (to Hotchner): You--you look like FBI.

  • Sean (Hotch's brother): "You saying that I can't take care of myself?"
Hotch: "No. This is my way of saying that I'm a jackass."
    Sean: "I guess it's hereditary."

  • Blackwolf: "There are many paths to the same place. Trust me."
Hotch: "Just so you know, you sound like a fortune cookie."

  • Hotch: "We took down these four."
    Reid: "Without firing a shot?"
John Blackwolf: "Captain America here shot number 5."
Hotch: "You're welcome. Number 6 is cut up pretty bad. I don't think he's gonna make it."
John Blackwolf: "At least I didn't shoot him."
Morgan: "I think I'd rather be shot."
Hotch: "There's an old Apache saying. 'You can take many paths to get to the same place.'"
    (Blackwolf smiles.)

  • Blackwolf: "Samuel. Tell the men from the FBI who the Ga'he are."
Reid: "The Ga'he are mighty spirits who dwell in desert caves--"
Hotch: "Reid. Is your name Samuel?"

The Turning Point in the Investigation:
When the two kidnappers offer to turn the girl over, and both turn in the father for having her kidnapped. The team realizes that there is someone working outside of the ADU.

Whodunit?
Ingrid Greisen was kidnapped by Eugene Leland and Kyle Van Owen. Her father paid them to kidnap her because he felt she was in trouble (she was brainwashed by Jackson Cally).

Jackson Cally and his group are responsible for killing the five college students, the Minton family (three young daughters, the husband and wife), and a police officer. By killing the five college students, they made it look like it was part of a Native American ritual. Upon further investigation into the crime scene, the team realizes that it could not have been done by just one tribe. Cally did 22 months in jail for auto theft and "found" religion. Upon his release from jail, he went from university to university where he studied Native American culture, and it was at the last university that he met and "brainwashed" Ingrid Greisen. He created his own "tribe" on the Indian Reservation. Cally sends other members of his "tribe" to attack the reservation and Hotch and Blackwolf stopped them.

Trivia:
-Charles Manson was the basis for the episode.
-Blackwolf's remarks about "21 Feet" are a reference to the Tueller Drill, a handgun combat drill devised by officer Dennis Tueller in the early 1980s. Tueller discovered through experience and testing that suspects who attacked officers with knives or other hand-weapons could cross surprising distances in the time it took the officer to draw, aim and fire their weapon in a way that effectively stopped the attack. He devise the handgun drill both to train officers to draw faster in order to counter this, and overall as a cautionary lesson about the distance a knife-wielding attack could cross.

When Morgan questions the ADU guy and claims that they have too many guns. Seriously?

450/200= 2.25 per person. Not exactly a weapons cache.

Seems to be a very poorly executed political statement about gun owners. Very poor.
