Season: 2 Episode # 18 Original Air Date: February 28, 2007

A case involving a serial killer believed to be copying Jack the Ripper takes Gideon to New Orleans after three victims are found with their throats cut. Once thought to have been killed in Hurricane Katrina, the discovery of a fourth victim in the French Quarter confirms the murderer is still alive. All the evidence and files had been lost in the flood, so the only clue the team has is the word "Jones" that the lead detective wrote on the wall just before he drowned. Meanwhile, Reid meets up with an old friend as he continues to struggle with the aftermath of being held hostage.

Set in:
New Orleans, LA
Best Moments Between Characters:
  • Reid, still trying to deal with the aftermath of 2x15, "Revelations," misses a plane to Texas to talk to a witness. Later, Gideon finds him at a bar, and the two talk. Prentiss tries to tell Gideon that she thinks something is wrong with Reid, only to discover that he already knows. Reid meets up with his old friend, Ethan.

Best Lines:
  • JJ: "You always drink while you're still on the clock?"
Det. LaMontagne: "This is New Orleans, honey, it's a cultural thing."
  • Ethan: "John Coltrane. Died of cancer, but most people think it's the booze and heroin that did him in."
Reid: "Are you trying to say something to me?"
    Ethan: "You look like hell."
    Reid: "I'm fine."
Ethan: "Reid, I'm a jazz musician in New Orleans. I know what it looks like when someone's not well. This may be the only time I can tell you something you don't already know. It may help you forget, but it won't make it go away. And if I can tell... You're surrounded by some of the best minds in the world. If you think they don't notice... [He shakes his hand, imitating tremors.] Well, for a genius, that's just dumb."
  • Tibideaux: "I don't know what to tell you, cher. I guess she must not have made that good of an impression."
    Prentiss: "Unlike yourself, right now."
  • Reid: "I guess I just needed to try to figure out if I could step away from this job."
    Gideon: "And?"
Reid: "I'll never miss another plane again."

The turning point in the investigation:
The team realizes that Jones is a bar where a woman was raped, and Det. LaMontagne Sr. was the only one who believed her.

Sarah Danlin, a former med student.

I've seen on other web sites that there's no listed music for this episode. Yet there is a good blues shuffle song in the initial bar scene where JJ and Ray are talking. He's going to drink a beer and on duty. He explains that it's New Orleans and a cultural thing. What is the song playing in the background? The drum roll starts at the very end of the previous scene and then shows the two sitting in the bar. I've tried google with part of the song lyrics "you have nothing to hide" and "my baby and me", but without any results. Any help greatly appreciated.
