Season: 3 Episode # 19 Original Air Date: May 14th, 2008

Tabula Rasa

Synopsis:
The team uses brain fingerprinting to see if a suspected serial killer who wakes up after four years in a coma really doesn't remember any of the crimes he supposedly committed.

Set in:
Roanoke, VA
Best Moments Between Characters:
  • (2004 flashback) Morgan followed the unsub to the roof, where he attempted to evade capture by jumping across the alley to the next building's roof. The unsub did not make it, and was barely holding onto the ledge. Morgan then went back to get a running start so he could go help the man. Hotch arrived on the roof at that time and argued with him not to jump like the unsub did, Morgan did so anyway, landing ontop the other rooftop. He then reached down to help the unsub but the unsub slipped and fell to the pavement.
  • While on the stand, Hotch profiled the defense attorney. He indicated that he was in debt due to an addiction to horse racing, and that his Blackberry went off every 20 minutes with the race results.

Best Lines:
  • (2004 flashback: Morgan is first meeting Garcia. He wants her to dig up some files for him.
He asks Reid her name and he says "Gomez, I think.")
Morgan: Excuse me, Gomez. [she doesn't answer] Hey! Babygirl.
    Garcia: Babygirl?
Morgan: Ah, forgive me. I just didn't know...
Garcia: I've been called worse. Now, what do you need?
The nickname has stuck ever since.
  • Garcia: You know what, Ma'am, I am done being nice. If you look to your cursor, you'll notice it's moving on it's own. That's me hacking your secure network. Now I've got our file, now I've got our social and now, 'cause you're grumpy, I'm gonna send your boss those Jamaican vacation photos. Check you out, no tan lines.
  • (About a photo)
Reid: It's remarkable. Something like this makes you question everything you thought you knew.
Garcia: Yeah. Like the monolith in 2001.
Reid: So there was actually a time when something like this was socially acceptable?
Garcia: Oh, you're young. The eighties left a lot of people confused. This is especially sad, though.
    (The
photo is revealed to be of Prentiss in high school, dressed in punk clothing)
  • (Hotch is being questioned by a skeptical attorney)
Attorney: The fact is, behavioral analysis is really just intellectual guesswork. You probably couldn't tell me the color of my socks with any greater accuracy than a carnival psychic.

    Hotch: Charcoal gray.
Attorney: Well, look at that – He got one right.
Hotch: You match them to the color of your suit. You also wear lifts, and you've had the soles of your shoes replaced. One might think you're frugal, but in fact you're having financial difficulties. You wear a fake rolex because you pawned your real one to pay your debts. My guess is to a bookie.
Attorney: I took this case pro bono. I am one of the most successful criminal attorneys in the state.
Hotch: Your vice is horses. Your blackberry's been buzzing on the table every 20 minutes, which happens to be the average time between posts from colonial downs. You're getting race results. And every time you do, it affects your mood in court, and you're not having a very good day. That's because you pick horses the same way you practice law – by always taking the long shot.
Attorney: Well, you spin a very good yarn, agent, but as usual, you've proven nothing.

Hotch: If I'm not mistaken, the results from the fifth race should be coming through any minute.
(The blackberry buzzes on the table)
Hotch: why don't you tell us if your luck has changed?
Attorney (to judge): Your honor, this is – what do you want me to do?
Judge: Either show us your blackberry or cut him loose, counselor.
    Attorney: Nothing further.
    Judge: Wise decision

The turning point in the investigation:
When Hotch saw the tear stain on the unsub's notepad; he realized the unsub was getting his memory back. UNSUB

Whodunit?
Brian Matloff, the UNSUB from the flashback. The team track him to nearby parkland after he escapes from police custody. There, they find him clutching the previously-undiscovered remains of his first victim.

Wow. I really liked this episode. Hotch did an outstanding job on the stand. I died laughing when he profiled the defense attorney in the middle of the courtroom. It was priceless! Go Hotch! Reid did a fantastic job as well. He handled and read the grieving father well. It was nice to see that connection they'd made years earlier continue and Reid was able to provide the father the closure he needed. It was a nice touch at the end when they stopped at the father's house.

I realize the writer's don't have to "lighten" it up by having romance, babies, etc. What they have been doing with the final scenes these last few episodes is adding just the right touch! It's personal and it completes the episode. As usual, the quotes were dead on.

i had a question about this episode......

ok so you konw how this episode had flashbacks...well i was wondering if they filmed the flashback parts(love morgan at the bigining with the baseball hat by the way!!!) during season 1 because Morgan and reid look like they did in season 1. i'm not really sure if anyone knows the answer but if someone does, that would be helpful.

Right after Hotch revealed to CC that the murderer was getting his memory back,
The scene after showed the murderer getting ready to "run for it".
And then we are back to the scene of Hotch and CC, CC begins with "Maybe you're right, but the fact is, it doesn't matter anymore". Hotch replies, "Does it? Don't you want to know who you're putting away?"
Does anybody know what they are talking about? Thanks.
