The Unsubs - Criminal Minds Wiki

"Unsub. That cracks me up, because every once in a while, every couple of episodes we have to break it down again for the audience in case we have any new viewers. [...] It's a big joke now on set."
(Criminal Minds on TV Guide's inFANity, A.J. Cook)

Morgan: A crime of opportunity, or was the unsub laying in wait for this kid specifically?
Deputy Harris: Unsub?
Hotch: Unknown Subject. The killer.
- 1x10 "The Popular Kids"

"Unsub" is an abbreviation of the unknown or unidentified subject of an investigation and in 'Criminal Minds' it is used to describe the serial killer or killers the team tries to track down every episode. The word was possibly inspired by the 1990s TV series "Unsub" which starred David Soul as head of a country wide forensic team.

smiley4099 Who do you think are the most notable Unsubs? 16 Apr 4 2011, 3:23 PM EDT by LuvDr.Reid

It has come to my attention (on Wikipedia) that people have different ideas on who the most notable Unsubs are. That only makes sense: People have different favorite characters and episodes; maybe you had something in common with one of them or understood why chose the path they did. There's the obvious ones, like Ian Doyle and the Reaper, but what about ones who only got one episode? Maybe you loved Elle and remember William Lee. Personally, I remember Carl Buford better than Billy Flynn, even though Flynn had the two-parter. So, after seeing over 133 Unsubs, who do you remember the most?

I believe Unsub is an actual word for the actual BAU in the FBI. I read the word Unsub in an book about profiling...
