CM Spinoff Given New Life?
Sep 30 2009, 12:29 AM EDT | Post edited: Sep 30 2009, 12:29 AM EDT
Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the Criminal Minds spinoff proposed last season will be given another shot, complete with a launch episode this spring.

"CBS will be doing some "Minds"-splitting this season.

The network is planning a potential spinoff from its hit crime drama "Criminal Minds" that will be created by the show's executive producer/showrunner Ed Bernero and executive producer Chris Mundy.

Mundy will be writing the planted spinoff, which will air as an episode of "Criminal Minds" in the spring, from a story by him and Bernero.

Like the original series, the potential new show would be produced by ABC Studios, the Mark Gordon Co. and CBS Studios.

Details are sketchy, but the spinoff is expected to feature a new team of FBI agents, not existing "Criminal Minds" characters.

The producers already have begun to send out feelers to talent agents about the types they're looking to cast...."

(The rest of the article can be found here: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i0e0331038f5cd3edfc3098372f17a86c )

Gotta say, I'm relieved that they're not looking to take any of our cast for this new show, but I'm of two minds about whether or not I'd watch.... The fact that Chris Mundy is involved seems to bode well, though.

What are everyone else's thoughts? Sound like a winner? Or something you'd rather skip?

If they succeed in making it different enough from the original I think it stands a chance. Don't know yet if I'm gonna watch it though. Do you find this valuable?

Sorry about the laziness, but I'm totally just copying and pasting my reply from the other thread. =]

Apparently the articles floating around out there about the spinoff aren't entirely factual (according to Jill, who heard the facts directly from Ed and Chris while she was on set in August.)

However, I believe that the spinoff would be popular. CriMi has a good, loyal fanbase (not unlike NCIS), and they could probably count on a good percentage of those viewers to watch the spinoff. Plus, Ed Bernero is one of those guys who actually listens to fan opinion - and correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he say (when the reports initially started surfacing), that he wouldn't go through with the spinoff if it didn't work?

i don't think it will be that good... i meen its not like they don't have good writers because i love Chris Mundy but what make's the show for me is the characters(there backgrounds. flaw's, quirks etc.) and you can't duplicate them. Like you can't have two Reids as it would be weird if they had another genius in the other show (and its not posible to have someone as alien from pop culture as Reid anyway !) plus Reid would loose what make's him unique if there was another genius. You couldn't really have another Garcia on another show ether as she is also unique and she is the man souorce of comedy on CriMi so where would the other show get it's humour ? there just example's but i think all the characters are great and that's what i love.
i'll still give it a chance just because i love CriMi though...lol

well that rant went on far to long !!

I'm a bit skeptical now about the spinoff, especially now that I've had proper time to read the casting call.

It seems a bit too cliched to me, and similar to other shows.

Cooper sounds a bit too much like Carter from "Dark Blue."
Gina seems a bit like Jaimie from the same show, but with some other stuff thrown in there for good dramatic measure.
Mick seems like the token mysterious tough guy.
Plus, to paraphrase from a comment seen elsewhere - the ex-con who found God and is trying to redeem himself is also named "Prophet." That's a huge tv/movie cliche right there.

Plus I'd seriously like to know how this team exists outside FBI bureaucracy (which is another parallel to "Dark Blue," a show about an elite unit that exists outside of LAPD bureaucracy) and is considered a Criminal Minds spinoff.

I'm gonna sound so terribly stupid... but, I don't really keep up with CM news much, but what, are they planning on canceling CM after this season or something? Or is gonna be kinda how they have NCIS and NCIS Los Angelas? :X Do you find this valuable?

Fabulous**. English toff alert. Can't comment on the actual show yet, obviously, but that character is going to irritate the proverbial out of me!

(I'm English and am fed up of only toffs or Cockney villains representing this country on US TV - there is more to England than the highly overrated stab-fest that masquerades as our capital city).

Please excuse my rant, but it annoys so many of us. Imagine if Americans were only represented as rednecks on the BBC, etc.

With regard to the spin-off, I will certainly give it a few views before I make up my mind. It can't be as awful as CSI:Miami though...

** = Sarcasm!

I don't think I'm going to like this show, based on the characters, but if it ever does take off, I guess I'll watch it just to see.

No, don't worry - there aren't any plans to end CM any time soon. There will be an episode of Criminal Minds in the spring that will introduce a spinoff team, and if those characters test well, the spinoff show will probably be given a chance to run on its own. It's sort of like the CSI spinoffs - none of the CM characters are leaving, and both shows will continue on on their own if the spinoff succeeds.

The character disscriptions sound a bit too famialir for my taste.....

As soon as I saw Mick, I thought 'Moonlight!' CBS canceled that show and tried to get Alex O'Laughton back with Three Rivers. Didnt work out too well. Maybe he''ll audtion to be 'Mick' again :)
From what I have heard about the Spin-off, I am not too impreseed, though.......

read the casting call and honestly it doesn't seem terribly interesting to me I'll probably watch the pilot just because its a cm spin off but i don't have high hopes. I mean they're only calling it a spin off because there is a former BAU member but outside of FBI bureaucracy? it doesn't really sound like a show about profilers almost like the only tie-in is the former BAU member. Ed Bernero won't dissapoint me... at the moment he doesn't. I'm looking foward to know to the final cast and watch them creating profiles... We know a great team (for sure, the best) but I think it will be interesting watch how a different team will focus the cases, how their personalities affect on it... Do you find this valuable?

If it is a spinoff though, would it be in Quantico but a different unit like CAC (it cant be another BAU cause there is only one BA Unit and it is in Quantico so it would be like doing 2 shows about 2 teams from the same exact unit and office and we would have already seen another team by now lol =) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. I'm not to thrilled about the idea because I'm not into all the other spin-off shows on CBS. I love watching NCIS, but I can stand NCIS L A. I like the original NCIS and Criminal Minds because of the way the characters interact with each other. Hetty is the only character on NCIS LA I actually like! And don't even get me started on CSI! I don't watch any of the shows anymore! Well sometimes when I'm on A&E, I may watch about 5 min. of CSI Miami and then I turn the channel! IMO, the original are always better. Why mess up a good thing?

I'll give it a chance, but based on the other spin offs, I doubt I'll like it.

I have to say.... Ditto on the CSI Miami. Who does David Caruso think he is????? I will admit that English characters are often pigeon-holed, and it bothers me too. (I lived in the UK during college.) However, I am a fan of many BBC shows - especially DW (DT will be missed) - and I sometimes get the feeling that Americans are portrayed as a bit daft. Just a personal feeling....

I'm not too excited about a possible spin-off because I love the original too much.

Yeah, I dont think that I am going to like the spin-off show because nothing can beat an original, and, the cast of CM absolutely can not be replaced by someone better, we already have the best cast for CM, so good luck... Do you find this valuable?
