A Page For Erin Strauss?
Dec 3 2011, 8:43 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 3 2011, 8:43 PM EST
I've asked this question elsewhere, but did not receive an answer. Maybe I'll have better luck here.
I was wondering why there doesn't appear to be a page dedicated to Strauss? Understandably everyone hates her, but don't you think that in not even acknowledging her, you are doing a grave disservice to the writing staff of this show? If everyone loved her, the writers wouldn't be doing their jobs, right? Television characters like hers run along the lines of every authority figure ever hated by the public. Usually these characters are men, but this one happens to be a woman. It doesn't matter if the show is about teachers, policemen/women, government, salespeople, attorneys, fashion, private business, family hierarchy, or the FBI. When you involve a character like this one, you know that the viewing public is going to hate that character. Its up to the writing staff to make sure that they are really, truly hated, and that the reasons for that hatred are appropriate and memorable.
Of course I'm new here and still finding my way. It's possible that there is a page devoted to Strauss, though I haven't been able to locate it. If that's the case, could somebody please show me how to locate it?

Why would anyone 'hate' a character in a TV show? If there is no page for Straus you can make one yourself. Do you find this valuable?

LittleLizard: I thought I had been clear on the character aspect, but I do see where I left that out in my second line. That should say, "Understandably everyone hates her character...." You are somebody who thinks like I do, and I thank you for bringing my error to my attention. I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's very strange to run across someone who says "I hate" so and so when the person being referred to is a figment of somebody's imagination written for a TV show!! (Please find my comments under "I hate jj".) Normally this irritates me to no end, yet I come across it so often that I am now guilty of having done exactly the same thing.
Personally, I enjoy a well-written character like Strauss. I come from the generation of Alexis Colby (Joan Collins) and J. R. Ewing (Larry Hagman). If you are not familiar, these two characters were very much "hated" by everyone to the point where they were known as the characters we loved to hate. The reason that we love to hate them is because they are so well written that we enjoy them when they are onscreen even though they leave something to be desired as "people".
As for starting a page on Strauss, I would have to concede that my knowledge of Strauss is not as well-rounded as most of the others here because I haven't been watching as long as most have. I'm certainly not as knowledgeable about her as I would want to be to do a page on her. I'm missing a great deal of her story, and with that in mind, well, far be it for me to try to pass myself off as any kind of an expert on the reasons why she does what she does or how and why she rationalizes her actions to herself. In the character, that is. Actually, that is why I went looking for a page about her to begin with - to see if anyone had an idea why she would think that what she thinks is correct or why her paranoia is so fully developed.
Thanks Again!

I think with a character like Strauss the writer "make" you dislike her (I agree, it's irritating when someone says he hates a fictional person), they do things in the episodes that you just have to dislike because it's bad for the characters we like. Love your "love to hate them" explanation, and I agree, if a "bad" person is flushed out well, then you get different aspects of that person. Gotta admit my knowledge of her is pretty limited, too (and I haven't seen S7 and half of S6 yet), so I understand when you say that you don't feel competent to make a page for her. As for her being paranoid, I don't think she is. She just tries to keep the team functioning and therefore makes hard desicions sometimes, but I think she really believes that what she doing is the right thing. Do you find this valuable?

I think that we never created a page for her as we didn't know her status would be so 'recurring'. It can always be done and information added! Do you find this valuable?

Wolfeaddict: Your comment has sent me into a tizzy trying to gather all my thoughts into some form of a cohesive reply. I agree and I disagree. Where I agree, it's 100%. Where we disagree, I feel strongly that part of the picture is missing yet I don't know if it's your picture or mine. I'm trying to organize my thoughts so that I can post them, and then we can figure out if I've seen less episodes than you have or if I'm just more paranoid than you are. lol
I will gather my thoughts as quickly as I can and post them ASAP. THANKS!

Wow! I've discovered that it is very difficult to write about Erin Strauss without adding suppositions and opinions. Maybe that is why no one has attempted this before now. There is simply too much about her that is not clear from what I can find. In order to post what I think about her, a lot would have to be given to ideas that form from watching her and listening to what she says to those in the BAU. Not everything is factual. Sorry, wasn't my intention. :) I gotta admit I haven't really thought about Strauss that much or in the deep yet. Maybe just because we haven't seen that much of her and next to nothing about her personal life. So it could very well be that it's my picture that missing a piece or two. Also I think that it's me who watched less episodes since I'm not even half through S6 yet.

I agree! But then what a character is like in our opinion is based on our thoughts when we watch. I mean there are facts but most of what we think of a character is based on his behavior and actions and that can be interpreted differently by each person.

I don't hate Strauss. I find her somewhat fascinating. If she were to change her gratuitously awful behaviour, I could like her. I think she's a well-written character and should have a page...and maybe some nice fanfictions. Do you find this valuable?
